The problem with the conservative economic policy of "every man for himself" is that it doesn't take into account every situation. It assumes that all who are struggling are shiftless, pathetic losers, which is mostly not the case. it's far better to be a bleeding heart liberal and err on the side of being TOO charitable, than it is to be a tight-fisted conservative who assumes the worst about every human being.
